Wampum

All wampum beadwork is done with historic accuracy and woven using traditional materials and techniques. I use imported glass wampum from the Czech Republic which is where the original 18th century merchants obtained their beads for the Indian Trade. They are still produced on the same exact machines as in the 18th century. I weave them on either brain tanned deer, dyed a brown hue using walnut hulls, or natural hemp. Glass wampum is very durable and came into the trade circuit in the early 1700's from Dutch traders. Clamshell wampum is very expensive and somewhat fragile. I can obtain the clamshell wampum but be aware each bead costs close to $5.00. I can use "imitation clamshell wampum" which is quite authentic in appearance however is not as strong as the glass and is made of an acrylic base. They look great and are very realistic for items that do not need to withstand a great deal of wear and tear. I would not use them for legging ties for example.
