Fingerweaving

Fingerweaving is sometimes called "flat braiding" and is an ancient technique of interlacing threads predating the loom. The fingers pick up the vertical warp threads and pass them through the horizontal weft threads in such a manner to form a variety of designs and patterns. During the 18th century Woodland tribes developed many techniques of complex techniques for fingerweaving incorporating dyed wools. Legging ties, straps, and sashes were popular uses of fingerweaving within the Woodland tribes, and were also adopted by the colonial scouts, woodsmen, and Longhunters.
